Olympian devils stopped by Nigeria

19 08 2008

Belgium were overpowered by Nigeria, the 1996 Olympic champions, in the opening minutes. The Africans raised the pressure and Olubayo Adefemi scored after 17 minutes.

Lille forward Kevin Mirallas missed an excellent chance for Belgium to equalise just before the break, 1-0 at half time.

Midfielder Faris Haroun probably had the best chance to equalise just after the break, but his shot was saved by the Nigerian goalkeeper and hit the bar.

Belgium had regained confidence, but took risks in defence with Nigeria playing the counter-attack. Ogbuke Obasi added a second one, putting an end to the Belgian quest for gold. The 2-0 was a mental blow for the Belgian team.

Nigeria even came 4-0 in front with thundering long-range shots by Emmanuel Ekpo and Chibuzor Okonkwo. Belgium replied with a free kick from defender Laurent Ciman.
