There she is! At last we see Kim Gevaert getting some of the action. She began her Olympics with the women’s 100 m sprint event. Gevaert was in the heat against Y. Nesterenko, the former winner of gold at the Games in Athens. Nesterenko proved to be no competition for a very strong Kim Gevaert. An acceptable time of 11.32 sec. predicted only good things to come. On- and upwards to the quarterfinals.
Approximately nine hours later the Belgian sprinter had a heavy task to follow. Gevaert came out in the strongest quarterfinal of all. Her goal: to finish as one of the first three. With competition from the American Lauryn Williams and Jamaican Kerron Stewart it seemed like the most difficult thing on earth. Our compatriot finsished in a time of 11.10 sec., good for third place and also the sixth time of all half finalists.
Without too much wasted forces she can now participate in the half-final of the 100 metres, hereby she equals her performance from four years ago in Athens. Theoretically, she could be up for her first Olympic final in the 100 m sprint, something no Belgian sportswoman has ever done. Fingers crossed for Kim to get her into the final. I believe she can do it, now you must do the same.
